US former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been booed outside Queen’s University in Belfast.
The moment came as she attended a ceremony to inaugurate her as the educational establishment’s first female chancellor, Sputnik reported.
In a short video that emerged on Twitter on Friday, Hillary Clinton is seen dressed in academic robes, with a child holding the garment to keep it from dragging on the ground.
The 41-second clip shows the ex-secretary of state going toward the university as people in the crowd starts to yell “war criminal” several times, while other individuals were heard shouting, apparently telling Clinton “to go f**k yourself”.
Some other persons were also heard yelling “shame on Queen’s”, with the former Democratic presidential candidate looking unfazed by the apparent booing.
The incident came amid UK media reports that a group of people held a rally near Queen’s University on Friday morning as Hillary Clinton arrived, protesting against her foreign policy as former US Secretary of States. The group is anti-war and was protesting according to the British media.
While some applauded during her degree ceremony, cries of “Shame on Queen’s! Shame on you!”, “War criminal!” and “Out! Out!” were heard.
People had gathered outside the gates of the university to protest the election of Clinton as the Chancellor.
“Secretary Clinton is an internationally recognized public servant who has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to Northern Ireland. She has an enormous amount to offer the University and will continue to work as a key advocate for Queen’s on the international stage,” Professor Ian Greer, the president and vice-chancellor of Queen’s University, said in a statement.
The term is for five years and will be largely ceremonial, however, Clinton will oversee graduation ceremonies, serve as the university’s ambassador and offer advice to senior management.
The politician was originally appointed as chancellor in January 2020 but her installation was delayed because of COVID. She is the university’s 11th chancellor and the first woman to hold the title.
The US politician took to Twitter to share her happiness about her new role in the university. “Just call me Madam Chancellor,” she tweeted.
